📈 How to Use a Pool Alkalinity Increaser (Like a Pro)
If your pool’s total alkalinity is too low, your pH will bounce all over the place—making the water uncomfortable and your chlorine less effective. A pool alkalinity increaser helps stabilise your pH and keeps your water chemistry balanced.
Here’s how to use it safely and effectively:
🧪 What Is an Alkalinity Increaser?
Most alkalinity increasers are made of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). It’s used to raise Total Alkalinity (TA) without drastically affecting your pH.
-
Ideal TA range: 80–120 ppm
-
Low TA symptoms: Cloudy water, fluctuating pH, corrosion on pool surfaces or equipment
✅ Step-by-Step: How to Use It
1. Test Your Pool Water
Use test strips, a digital meter, or bring a sample to Pool Perfectionists for a free in-store test. Note your Total Alkalinity (TA) reading.
2. Calculate the Dose
A common guide:
➡️ 200g of sodium bicarbonate will raise TA by 10 ppm per 10,000 litres of water.
Example: If your 50,000L pool is at 60 ppm and you want to reach 100 ppm, add about 800g.
3. Dissolve (Optional but Recommended)
Mix the required amount in a bucket of pool water to help it dissolve evenly. This also prevents undissolved powder from settling on surfaces.
4. Add to Pool
-
Pour the solution around the edges of the pool with the pump running.
-
Avoid pouring directly into skimmers or concentrated areas.
5. Circulate and Wait
Run your pump for 4–6 hours to ensure full circulation. Don’t retest or add other chemicals until then.
6. Retest
After 6 hours (or the next day), test again to see if further adjustment is needed.
⚠️ Pro Tips
-
Don’t raise more than 20 ppm at once. Split large doses over 6–12 hour intervals to avoid cloudiness or scaling.
-
Adjust pH second. Alkalinity affects pH stability, so always balance alkalinity before correcting pH.
-
Store in a dry area, away from other chemicals.
🧤 Safety First
Always wear gloves and avoid inhaling any dust. Never mix pool chemicals together, and keep out of reach of kids and pets.
