Why Pool Walls Still Need Brushing, Even With a Robot

Choose a surface-safe brush and clean steps, corners and waterline areas your pool robot may miss.

Brushing loosens the film and dirt that collect on pool surfaces so filtration or vacuuming can remove them. A robot can help, but steps, benches, corners and areas behind ladders often need attention by hand.

Manual brushing remains useful on steps, benches and tight corners.

Match the brush to the finish

Check the pool manufacturer’s care instructions. A soft nylon brush is commonly used on delicate finishes, while aggressive wire brushes can damage vinyl, fibreglass, grout and some coated surfaces. Do not assume that a brush sold for pools is suitable for every pool.

Work in a useful sequence

  1. Remove floating debris and empty baskets.
  2. Brush accessible walls, then steps, benches and corners, using overlapping strokes.
  3. Let circulation carry suspended dirt towards the filter, and vacuum material that settles.
  4. Check filter pressure and flow afterwards, cleaning the filter when required.

Give trouble spots extra attention

Shaded corners and areas with weak circulation can become slippery before the rest of the pool looks dirty. Include these in your routine and check water chemistry if film returns quickly. Repeated brushing alone will not resolve inadequate sanitiser or a circulation problem.

Know when a mark is not dirt

A stain that does not lift under gentle brushing may be metal staining, scale or a change in the finish. Stop before damaging the surface and arrange identification. Never scatter concentrated chemicals onto a mark as an experiment.

A practical routine for a leafy backyard

In a pool beneath trees, remove leaves before brushing. Otherwise, the brush can break them into smaller pieces and spread material that was easier to collect intact. Work from accessible shallow areas towards deeper sections, without leaning so far over the edge that your footing becomes unsafe.

Give steps and benches their own pass rather than assuming a wall-cleaning robot reaches them. Many robots need sufficient depth, traction and room to manoeuvre. A clean main floor can coexist with dirty step risers and corners.

How often should I brush?

Use the pool’s condition to refine the routine. A regular weekly inspection is a useful opportunity to brush areas that need it, while visible film, an algae recovery or heavy debris may require more attention. Follow any special instructions for a new or recently resurfaced pool, where the finish provider may specify a particular brushing programme.

What different results tell you

A small cloud that lifts easily may be settled dust. Slippery film returning quickly suggests the maintenance and water conditions need review. A hard deposit that stays in place should not be attacked with progressively more force. If the brush releases grit from the actual finish, stop and identify whether the surface is deteriorating.

Choosing equipment that makes the job easier

A sound telescopic pole, a suitable brush width and an angle that reaches the wall matter more than an aggressive bristle. Inspect worn brush edges and pole fittings before use so exposed metal or loose components do not scrape the pool. Store tools out of direct weather where practical.

For owners who want less manual work, a suitable robot can handle much of the accessible floor and walls. Choose it for the pool’s shape and debris, while keeping a brush for the places it cannot reach.

For technique around awkward areas, read cleaning pool steps and corners. If brushing repeatedly releases heavy debris or the surface is flaking, ask for an assessment before using stronger tools.

Every pool is different. Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions and product labels. If you are unsure, speak with a qualified pool professional.
