Pool Ozone Systems, What to Ask Before Installing One

Compare the treatment role, maintenance requirements and installation needs of an ozone system.

An ozone system treats water within a designed circulation process. Its suitability depends on the complete installation, not simply whether an ozone generator can be connected to the plumbing.

Understand what it replaces

Ask the supplier to specify the ongoing sanitiser residual and testing required in the pool. Treatment at the equipment does not by itself provide a lasting residual throughout the swimming water. Avoid interpreting an add-on system as permission to stop normal disinfection.

Review the installation

The design needs suitable flow, contact arrangements and safe management of gas. Use the manufacturer’s installation requirements and a qualified installer. Ozone should not be released into occupied spaces or approached as a DIY plumbing experiment.

Compare ownership costs

  • Generator and component replacement intervals.
  • Electrical use and service access.
  • Flow and fault monitoring.
  • Routine sanitiser, pH and equipment checks.
  • Availability of local support and replacement parts.

Start with your actual problem

If the pool is cloudy or repeatedly green, first diagnose circulation, filtration and sanitiser performance. An additional treatment device will not repair a damaged filter or remove leaves from the floor.

Questions for the proposed installer

  • What pool problem is the system intended to improve?
  • How will the required flow and contact arrangement be established?
  • What protections manage a flow fault or unwanted gas release?
  • Which existing equipment and sanitiser requirements remain?
  • Who provides commissioning and ongoing service?

Ask for answers tied to the actual model and installation. A diagram should show where the treatment sits in the circulation system, with service access and the manufacturer’s required safety provisions.

What a complete quote should explain

Look for the unit, required plumbing and electrical work, commissioning, routine consumables and expected service tasks. Clarify what is included if additional changes are needed after inspection. Comparing only the generator price can miss a substantial part of the installation.

Keep a baseline for comparison

Record the current water results, equipment and maintenance routine before installation. After commissioning, ask the installer to explain the settings, alarms and normal checks. Keep the written sanitiser programme with the equipment records. The outcome should be judged against the agreed purpose, while normal water testing and filtration continue.

Ask for a written maintenance plan and model-specific performance information before comparing quotes. See UV treatment explained for another supplementary approach, or discuss your existing setup.

Every pool is different. Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions and product labels. If you are unsure, speak with a qualified pool professional.
