How to Lower or Drain Pool Water Safely in Sydney

Lowering the water by a few centimetres is very different from emptying a pool. A full drain can damage the shell, surface, hydrostatic system and surrounding structure, so it should not be treated as a routine maintenance job.

Why are you removing water?

The safest method depends on the reason. An overflowing pool may only need to return to its normal skimmer level. Very high stabiliser, salt or dissolved material may require a controlled partial replacement. Surface work, major contamination or repairs may require a full professional drain.

Ways pool water may be lowered

• Filter waste setting: available on some sand filter systems.
• Dedicated waste line: fitted to some plumbing layouts.
• Submersible pump: useful when the filtration system cannot discharge safely.
• Controlled siphon: slow and only suitable where placement and discharge are safe.

Before using any method, confirm where the water will go. Pool water can contain chlorine, salt and other chemicals, and discharge requirements vary by location.

Using a multiport valve

Turn the pump off before moving the handle. Select waste only if you understand the valve and discharge line. Never let the pump run dry as the level falls. If lowering the water below the skimmer, the suction arrangement must be assessed first.

Why a full drain is risky

Water inside the pool helps counter pressure from surrounding soil and groundwater. Removing it can allow a shell to move or a fibreglass pool to lift. Vinyl liners can shrink or shift. Older surfaces can crack, delaminate or deteriorate when exposed.

When partial water replacement is useful

A measured partial replacement can help when a reading cannot be corrected by normal treatment, but test the water first. Guessing can waste water and fail to solve the problem.

• Check recent rain and groundwater conditions.
• Identify the hydrostatic relief system.
• Plan discharge and refill timing.
• Inspect the surface before pressure washing or acid treatment.
