Pool Ionisers, Benefits, Limits and Maintenance Questions
Understand why metal ion treatment does not remove the need for a suitable sanitiser and regular water testing.
Pool ionisers release metal ions, commonly copper and sometimes silver, into water. They should be assessed as part of a complete treatment system rather than as a promise of a maintenance-free or automatically chlorine-free pool.

Ask how disinfection is maintained
Request the system’s written sanitiser requirements and evidence for its intended application. Algae control, oxidation of swimmer waste and rapid disinfection are different jobs. Clear water alone cannot demonstrate that all of them are being managed.
Monitor metal levels
Metal concentrations need suitable testing. Excess metal can contribute to staining, particularly when water conditions change. Record results and electrode settings rather than increasing output because the water looks green.
Compare ongoing work
- Required sanitiser and water balance tests.
- Electrode inspection and replacement costs.
- Compatibility with the pool finish and existing equipment.
- How the system responds to heavy swimming, rain and algae.
- Support if staining or poor water quality develops.
Decide on the whole system
Compare written operating requirements with your current pool routine. A purchase should solve an identified problem, not simply add another controller and test. Follow the manufacturer’s complete instructions and seek independent advice if advertised claims appear to conflict with them.
Compare the written operating plan
Ask the supplier to list every routine measurement, the equipment used to take it and the response to an out of range result. Include how metal levels will be controlled and what happens after heavy swimming or rain. A clear sales claim should be supported by clear operating instructions.
Check compatibility before installation
Provide the pool finish, heater details, plumbing arrangement and current sanitiser programme. Ask who will confirm compatibility and commission the complete system. Keep the installation and water requirements together so a future service technician does not have to infer the intended setup.
Budget beyond the controller
- Electrodes and other replacement components.
- Metal testing supplies and routine water testing.
- Servicing and access to qualified support.
- Any treatment still needed for oxidation and disinfection.
Obtain a written response about how staining or an inadequate sanitiser residual would be investigated. If the pool already has unexplained marks, diagnose those first so an existing issue is not confused with a later equipment change.
