Pool Automation Maintenance, Checks That Keep It Reliable

Check schedules, sensors, connectivity and manual operation without disturbing safety interlocks or electrical wiring.

Automation can control filtration, heating and dosing, but it still depends on working sensors, adequate water flow and correct settings. A reassuring app screen is not proof that the equipment is doing its job.

Keep a record of the setup

Save the controller model, installer details, normal schedules and equipment assignments. Photograph settings before changing them. After an outage or seasonal time change, confirm the controller clock and watch a complete scheduled start.

Check the equipment, not just the app

  • Compare displayed temperature and chemistry readings with independent measurements.
  • Check that the pump runs, water returns to the pool and the heater receives the required flow.
  • Look for leaking dosing lines, empty chemical containers and visible sensor damage without opening electrical enclosures.
  • Keep the controller dry and ventilation openings clear.

Diagnose a connection problem

If the app is offline, check whether local schedules still work. A Wi-Fi failure and an equipment fault are different problems. Follow the manufacturer’s reconnection procedure before resetting the controller, because a factory reset may erase equipment settings.

Make seasonal changes carefully

Adjust one setting at a time and confirm the effect on water quality. Reducing pump speed can affect a chlorinator or heater’s minimum flow. Do not defeat flow switches, dosing interlocks or temperature protections to silence an alarm.

Arrange service when readings drift

A monthly automation check that is actually useful

Choose a normal operating day and watch the system change from idle to filtration. Confirm the pump starts at the intended speed, the correct valves move and the chlorinator or heater begins only when its conditions are met. Then compare the schedule with what the pool currently needs. A summer schedule copied into winter can run equipment unnecessarily, while a reduced winter schedule can become inadequate as swimming resumes.

Write down any alarm exactly as displayed, including whether it clears by itself. “The system is not working” gives a technician much less to work with than “the pump starts, the heater shows low flow and the chlorinator stays off”.

After an outage or internet change

Check the controller time, local operation and stored schedules before changing settings. If you replace a router, record the network requirements from the controller manual. Do not repeatedly factory reset devices when the problem may simply be a changed Wi-Fi name or password.

Why independent testing still matters

An automated pH or sanitiser display is a reading from a sensor in a particular location. Dirty probes, ageing components or poor sample flow can affect that reading. Compare it with a properly taken independent sample and follow the model’s calibration process if there is a persistent difference. Do not adjust dosing to force agreement with a test you have not verified.

Before booking a service visit

Send photographs of the controller and equipment pad, the model names, exact error messages and a short account of what changed. Include any recent plumbing work, new equipment or altered schedules. This helps distinguish a setup issue from a component fault and reduces the chance of replacing working hardware.

Sensors need model-specific cleaning, calibration and eventual replacement. Use the specified calibration solutions and procedure. Repeated alarms, unexplained dosing or electrical faults need the installer or an appropriately qualified technician. Send the model and exact fault message so the issue can be assessed.

Every pool is different. Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions and product labels. If you are unsure, speak with a qualified pool professional.
