Pool Cleaning Tips & Tricks

Why Pool Circulation is Critical

Understand how circulation, filtration and sanitiser work together, and identify weak flow and areas that need manual attention.

Circulation moves pool water through the filter and treatment equipment, then returns it to the swimming area. It helps distribute treatment and collect suspended debris. A running motor is only part of that process: the pool also needs adequate flow and equipment working in the intended arrangement.

Pump speed must support filtration and the flow requirements of connected equipment.

Follow the water path

Water usually travels from the skimmer or other suction points through the pump and filter, then any connected treatment equipment before returning to the pool. The exact layout varies. Keep a labelled photo of the installation and have normal valve positions explained before adjusting them.

Check for restrictions

  • Keep water within the skimmer’s operating range.
  • Clear baskets using the proper shutdown procedure.
  • Compare filter pressure at the same pump speed.
  • Watch for persistent air, surging or weak returns.
  • Record any heater or chlorinator low flow warning.

High and low pressure can mean different things. A single gauge reading is less useful than the change from a known clean baseline with comparable operating conditions.

Remember steps and benches

A pool can have strong return flow and still collect debris in corners or behind ladders. Brush and clean these areas manually. Have return direction reviewed if the same area repeatedly develops film, while also checking sanitiser and water balance.

Set hours and speed together

A slower variable speed setting may need a longer schedule, and connected heaters or chlorinators have minimum flow requirements. Review the complete system before reducing speed. Never bypass a flow switch to keep treatment equipment operating.

Turning over a calculated pool volume is useful context, but it does not prove every part of the pool has been treated equally. Confirm the practical outcome through water testing, clarity, skimming and the equipment’s operating requirements.

A robot helps with a different job

A robot can collect floor debris in its own filter. It does not replace the main circulation system or distribute sanitiser throughout all plumbing. Empty its basket after use and continue normal water and equipment checks.

If flow changed suddenly, see low pressure troubleshooting. For schedule planning, read summer pump run time and record results before and after a setting change.
