How Long Should You Run Your Pool Pump in Summer in Sydney?

There is no single summer pump setting that suits every Sydney pool. The correct run time depends on water temperature, pump speed, filter size, chlorinator output, pool use and the actual flow through the system.

Why summer needs more circulation

Warm water, stronger sunlight, storms and more swimmers increase sanitiser demand. Leaves and fine debris also reach the filter more often. A schedule that worked in winter may be inadequate in January.

Start with the whole system

Pump run time cannot be separated from water flow. A variable speed pump running slowly may need longer to move the same volume as a single speed pump. A dirty filter, blocked basket or partly closed valve can reduce effective circulation even when the timer shows many hours.

What should determine the schedule?

• Pool volume: larger pools require more water movement.
• Actual flow: pump speed and plumbing resistance matter.
• Sanitation: a salt chlorinator only produces while water is flowing.

When reducing speed saves more than reducing hours

Variable speed pumps can often circulate water efficiently at a lower speed for longer. Higher speed may still be required for backwashing, some heaters, cleaners, water features or chlorinators with a minimum flow requirement.

1. Clean baskets and establish normal filter pressure.
2. Confirm the pump holds prime and returns are strong.
3. Set a schedule that supports the chlorinator and skimming.
